The tradition and folklore of Canarian women in the fields played a crucial role in the life of the Canary Islands. On Gran Canaria, rural women were referred to as Maúras or even Magas (Magicians) due to their significant contributions in agriculture, food production, and various artisanal endeavors essential for daily life. Unfortunately, the importance of women’s traditions in the countryside hasn’t always received the recognition it deserves, leading to the loss of some customs. However, current efforts in the Canary Islands aim to revive and preserve these feminine traditions. Tropia Art actively contributes to this revival through artistic expressions.
The traditional clothing of Gran Canaria, particularly in its female version, is renowned for its vibrant colors, with white, red, or yellow prevailing. The striped skirt, accompanied by an intricately embroidered apron and a corset-like piece, constitutes the attire. A long scarf, reaching the waist, adorns the head along with the typical female puppy. Canarian women have been, and some continue to be, skilled ceramic artists. The island’s pottery, primarily crafted from clay, has ancient roots dating back to the aboriginal civilizations. Fortunately, this ceramic tradition has endured. The rooster, revered in many cultures worldwide, holds a special place in the rural life of the Canary Islands, symbolizing confidence, good luck, and protection.
