This illustration captures the deity, Tlaloc, in the form of a fish totem. Tlaloc, an ancient rain god revered in the Aztec culture of Central America, embodies the essence of water and earthly fertility, bestowing the benevolent gift of life through rain. Represented in various Aztec depictions, Tlaloc dons a distinctive mask with large round eyes and elongated fangs. The name Tlaloc is rooted in the Nahuatl word tlālli, meaning “earth.” Interpreted as the “path beneath the earth” or “long cave,” Tlaloc is highly regarded in rituals for his ability to unleash hail, thunder, and lightning, establishing himself as the master of the potent element of water. The fish, a powerful symbol of emotions and the unconscious signifies the higher self. As water brings forth life, the creatures dwelling beneath its surface symbolize fertility, birth, and rebirth.
