Tlaloc is an ancient rain god of the Aztec culture of Central America. He represents the water, earthly fertility through the rain and for this reason he is considered the beneficent giver of life. In his several Aztec representations, he wears a peculiar mask with large round eyes and long fangs. Often he is also represented as a fish like in this illustration. His name Tlaloc derives from the Nahuatl word tlālli “earth”. Its meaning has been interpreted as “path beneath the earth” or “long cave”. In rituals he was highly respected for his ability to send hail, thunder, and lightning, and for being the lord of the powerful element of water. In general, the Fish represents emotions and the unconscious of higher-self. Since water brings life, all the creatures living beneath its surface will symbolize fertility, birth, and rebirth.
