El Hierro is the smallest island of the Canary Islands and many consider it the most mysterious due to its various myths. It is the furthest island of the Canaries in the Atlantic Ocean. Its name is attributed to Ptolemy, a Greco-Egyptian astronomer who located, in the 2nd century, the Zero Meridian at the western end of the island, coinciding precisely with Punta de Orchilla on El Hierro. It would remain so for centuries until, in 1884, it was transferred to Greenwich. The first civilization of the island were the so-called Bimbaches, an aboriginal tribe that lived on the island at least since the year 120 of our era and in their language the island was called Hero. Since the existence of the aborigines, the elder wolf dog lived with them, called in their aboriginal language Cancha, half dog and half wolf. It is a dog breed native to the island and resembles the Arabian wolf. El Hierro is considered the greenest and most fertile island of all, with a large variety of cattle and crops.
