This illustration shows us an representation of an african mask inspired by a jungle tribe from the rainforest area of El Congo. Masks are made to resemble people, animals and other objects that tribes and cultures identify with. The main intention of this kind of sculptures and masks is to connect with the Afterlife. African communities believe that the masks can help them communicate with the spirits who live in forests or the open savannah. In most ancient civilizations, also in Africa, leaves and feathers on the head or as head decoration, symbolize the power to fly and ascend to the cosmos, which is the equivalent action of connecting with the beyond. Palm leaves from the rainforest are used in this sculpture.
This artwork combines beautifully with other african mask illustrations like the Dahomey Amazona Limied Edition Print.
