The exact origin of the Amazon warrior women has never become clear.Various female warrior tribes from different cultures and continents are called Amazons. One of them is the so-called Dahomey tribe on the African continent. The warriors of their tribe were called the Mino (our Mothers) or Ahosi (king’s wives) while European observers called them the Dahomey Amazons due to their similarity with the Amazons of the Greek mythology and also of ancient Antolia. The Dahomey Amazons were later a frontline military unit formed during Queen Hangbe’s rule who resided in Abbomey, a city in Southern Benin that used to be capital of the Dahomey Empire. Like many native warriors, the Dahomey women wore tropical leaves on their heads as a symbol of spiritual power and deep connection with nature.
This illustration combines beautifully with other african mask inspired artwork like the African Goddess Limited Edition Print.
