Canarian Heritage celebrates the rich cultural tapestry of the Canary Islands, intertwining traditional attire, indigenous craftsmanship, and emblematic flora and fauna.
At the heart of this piece is a woman seated gracefully on the grass, adorned in the traditional Canarian dress. Her pose exudes tranquility and connection to the land, reminiscent of a historical photograph of Juana Manrique, sister of the renowned artist and environmentalist César Manrique. César Manrique was instrumental in integrating art with the natural landscapes of Lanzarote, advocating for sustainable development and the preservation of the island’s unique beauty.
Beside her stands a Canarian goat, symbolizing the island’s deep-rooted pastoral traditions. From the time of the Guanches to the present day, goats have played a fundamental role in the Canarian economy, culture, and gastronomy.
Adjacent to the figure are pieces of indigenous Canarian pottery, bridging the islands’ aboriginal heritage with contemporary traditions. These ceramics echo the craftsmanship of the early inhabitants, reflecting their artistry and daily life.
In the backdrop stands a Drago tree (Dracaena draco), one of the symbols of the Canary Islands. Historically, the sap of the Drago tree was believed to have medicinal properties and was used by the indigenous people for various purposes.
This artwork serves as a homage to the Canary Islands’ heritage, illustrating the harmonious blend of human presence and nature, tradition and evolution.
