Chang’eor Ch’ang Ois the principal Chinese moon goddess whose loveliness is celebrated in oriental mythology. Her story tells that she sought refuge in the moon when her consort, Hou Yi (the Lord Archer), discovered that she had stolen the drug of immortality given to him by the gods and the moon was finally her savior as safe hiding place. Chinese civilizations arrange incense tables to worship the goddess Chang’e, praying for happiness and safety. Since then, worshipping and appreciating the moon during the Mid-Autumn festival has become popular. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves into the Earth’s shadow. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are exactly or very closely aligned.
