La Virgen del Pino is an homage to the deep bond between feminine presence, nature, and the ancestral spirit of Gran Canaria. Inspired by the island’s beloved guardian, this artwork reimagines her not through religious dogma, but as a symbol of rooted wisdom, wild connection, and natural grace.
According to local legend, around the year 1481, a vision of the Virgin Mary appeared high in the branches of a great Canary pine tree in the village of Teror. The light surrounding her presence marked the beginning of a profound devotion that transformed the area into a sacred pilgrimage site. Over time, she became the spiritual protector of the island — not only of its people, but of its forests, mountains, and skies.
Each element in this piece holds meaning:
The Pinus canariensis, ancient and resilient, symbolizes protection, memory, and strength.
The dragon trees, with their healing red sap, represent sacred life force and longevity.
The hawk is the island’s wild spirit — a messenger of clarity, freedom, and deep perception.
The volcanic rock beneath her grounds her presence in the primal fire of the island’s origin.
And her crown, woven from pinecones, reflects the majesty of the forest and the beauty of what is quietly powerful.
