El Hierro, the Canary Islands, is often deemed the most enigmatic of the islands, steeped in various myths that contribute to its mysterious allure. Situated furthest west in the Atlantic Ocean, the island derives its name from Ptolemy, a Greco-Egyptian astronomer who, in the 2nd century, established the Zero Meridian at its western extremity, precisely coinciding with Punta de Orchilla on El Hierro. This designation endured for centuries until 1884 when it was relocated to Greenwich. The initial inhabitants of the island were the Bimbaches, an aboriginal tribe present on the island since at least the year 120 CE, referring to it as Hero in their language. Throughout the existence of the aborigines, a unique wolf-dog companion, known as Cancha in their aboriginal tongue, thrived. This canine, resembling the Arabian wolf, represents a native breed to the island, half dog and half wolf. El Hierro is celebrated as the lushest and most fertile among the Canary Islands, boasting a rich variety of livestock and crops.
