Phoenix canariensis, the phoenix palm or Canary palm, is a species of palm endemic to the Canary Islands. Due to its beauty, ease of adaptation and resistance to cold and ability to survive with little water, it is one of the most widely used palm trees in gardening. It is a protected species in the islands of origin. The Canary palm tree is considered the natural symbol of the Canary archipelago, together with the Canary Bird. On the islands they can be found alone in the middle of the desert, as the only tree showing off its beauty although shaken by strong winds. The clothes and hat shown in the illustration apart from paying homage to the elegant movements of the Canarian wind, come from North Africa, specifically from the Sahara area and women of past times wore these light but long linen dresses to protect themselves in the desert from the strong african sun that also reaches the islands because of its proximity.
