In ancient times, the Uraeus Cobra was the representation of a sacred serpent and an emblem of supreme power often worn on the headdresses of ancient Egyptian deities and sovereigns. Uraeus, in Greek Ouraios, is the Egyptian word for cobra. The pharaohs wore a Uraeus cobra symbol on their crown to represent their authority and power over Egypt and the Nile. The Uraeus cobra was also a protective symbol and was believed to guard the pharaoh as well as to symbolize his role as protector of the country. As represented in this illustration, Desert Cobras are found in dry areas of Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, northwestern Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.
