Playa quemada, meaning “Burned Beach“, is one of these unique beaches you will never forget. Located on the volcanic island Lanzarote, it is a small hidden village between volcanos created by fishermen in ancient times. It is composed of volcanic rocks and the only vegetation found are cacti and Agaves. The name Agave is derived from the Greek “Agavos” meaning “illustrious.” In ancient tribal cultures like the Aztec goddess, Mayheul, represented Agave’s symbol of long life and health, dancing and fertility. The Agave plant only blooms with its majestic trunk once in its life and then dies, this wonderful moment is what I have captured in the illustration. Playa Quemada is so visually unique, that several retro movies have been shot of attractive swimmers spending their holidays with intense love romances in Lanzarote. There is not much fauna in Playa Quemada, but there is a faithful friend that peeks out from the volcanic rocks: the lizard. This dragon like creature is said to be a minuscule being on earth, but wise among wise. It seems that the contemplative ecstasy of being stunned looking at the sun, gives them a certain mystical character. They are black with blue rainbow reflections and they love when you give them a sweet piece of banana.
