The Mochica or Moche civilization, situated along the northern Pacific coast of Peru, was an ancient Andean tribe. Named after the significant Moche site and its corresponding river valley, Moche served as the capital and primary city of this civilization. The Mochica religion embraced polytheism, honoring various gods. Renowned for their intricately crafted pottery, the Moche people created numerous ceramics for both domestic and ritual purposes, with some directly tied to sacred religious ceremonies. The pottery depicted a diverse array of subjects, including humans, animals, mythic figures, and plants.
Within this pottery, the puma symbolizes the intermediary realm and represents life on Earth. The Moche people revered the puma as a powerful and robust creature, recognizing its prowess as one of nature’s finest predators. This illustration is part of the Mochica Limited Edition Prints Collection, seamlessly complementing other drawings within the collection. Explore additional pieces from the collection here.
