The Xolo, a dog with a significant role in the lives of ancient Mexicans, served various functions, including guiding the souls of the deceased to the underworld. Essentially a psychopomp, the Xolo played a crucial role in leading departed souls to the sacred realm of Mictlán. The term “Xolo,” derived from Nahuatl, translates to deformity, monstrosity, or monster, reflecting the physical characteristics of this canine companion.
In Nahua cosmogony, Xólotl is a deity depicted as a dog, serving as the twin brother of Quetzalcóatl. While Quetzalcóatl presided over the sunrise, Xólotl accompanied him on the journey through the kingdom of Night and death. Frida Kahlo actively contributed to the preservation of the Xolo breed, which was nearly extinct during her time. Beyond keeping them as pets, the artist incorporated the Xolo as a symbol in some of her works, such as “El abrazo de Amor del Universo, y la Tierra (Mexico), Diego, yo, and Mr. Xolotl.”
The Xolo gained such prominence that, around 1954, the International Cynological Federation organized the Xolo Expedition, dedicated to searching for wild specimens to ensure the recovery of this unique and culturally significant canine species.
