Uraeus, in greek Ouraios, is the Egyptian word for Cobra. In ancient Times it was the representation of a sacred serpent as an emblem of supreme power, worn on the headdresses of ancient Egyptian deities and sovereigns. The pharaohs wore a Uraeus symbol on their crown in order to represent their authority and power of Egypt and the Nile. The Uraeus was also a protective symbol and was believed to guard the pharaoh as well as to symbolize his own role as protector of the country. As represented in this illustration, Desert Cobras are found in dry and desert areas of Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, northwestern Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.
