Anubis, represented as a black chakal (a wild desert dog) in ancient Egypt, was one of the oldest and most important deities. He preceded Osiris as funerary god and lord of the Underworld, afterwords he became Osiris’ assistant to help him with the various tasks to prepare a soul for the Afterlife, like the process of mummification and embalmment. His main duty was to guide men and women into the Underworld. Anubis’ female counterpart was Anput, the goddess of purification, also represented in this artwork. Anubis was a symbol of protection in front of the doors of the Underworld and Afterlife, safeguarding the deceased from vicious scavengers.
