This Indian sacred animals print draws inspiration from the animals worshiped in India. In Hindu mythology, certain animals either accompany the deities or symbolize their incarnations. Five principal Indian sacred animals are recognized in various mythological narratives across India:
Waghoba वाघोबा: An ancient tiger/leopard deity, worshipped by numerous tribes in India for centuries. The deity is sometimes exclusively described as a tiger or a leopard, or as a deity capable of assuming both forms. The Royal Bengal Tiger is also a national symbol of India.
Hanuman हनुमान्: Represented as a monkey, often referred to as the “son of Pawan,” the Hindu god of wind. Hanuman is renowned for his daring feats, strength, and unwavering loyalty.
Kamadhenu कामधेनु: Hindus, who are predominantly vegetarians, consider the cow a sacred symbol of life that deserves protection and reverence. In the Vedas, the cow is associated with Aditi, the mother of all the gods.
Ganesha गणेश: Depicted as an elephant, Ganesha, meaning “Lord of the people,” is a remover of obstacles. He paves the way for individuals to progress in life and symbolizes wisdom, understanding, and a discriminating intellect required for achieving perfection.
Manasa মনসা: The Goddess of snakes or Serpentine Goddess, Manasa, whose name means “Intelligence,” is widely worshipped during the rainy season when snakes are most active. She is also a significant fertility deity.
